(1799-1879)
   economist and political figure
Born in Marseille, Marie-Roch-Louis Reybaud was a liberal journalist and the author of Études sur les réformateurs ou socialistes modernes (1840-43). In 1843, he published a satirical novel (Jérôme Parturot à la recherche d'une position sociale) that, in light of the july monarchy regime, had a great success. A liberal deputy in 1846, Reybaud moved away from the left after the revolution of 1848, joined the Right in the Constituent and Legislative Assemblies (1848, 1849), and published a critique of the new regime in his novel Jérôme Paturot à la recherche de la meilleure république (1848). Reybaud retired after the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, and wrote a number of works on economics.
